Hong Kong Energy Efficiency Labelling Schemes for Household Appliances

Since April 1996, you may find energy labels displayed on some refrigerators in the market. By now you can also find these labels on room coolers. In future, more types of household appliances will carry these labels. The energy labels provide more energy consumption data consumers. The energy labels will only be displayed on appliances that have been registered in Hong Kong under the Energy Efficiency Labelling Schemes.

Choose energy-efficient appliances

Save on the electricity bill and help improve the environment

Why is it important to save energy?

Fossil fuels reserves are limited.
Fuel burning leads to air pollution and damages the environment.
CO2 emission causes global warming.
Save on your energy bills!
What does the label contain?

annual energy consumption figure
energy efficiency grading
other important data relevant to the types of the appliances
all according to a unified standard

Potential $ savings...

The more energy efficient the appliances, the more electricity you save.
You can save up to several hundred dollars a year.

The way the gradings are defined

The gradings are from 1 to 5. Grade 1 is the best.

(e.g. a grade 1 room cooler is at least 15% more energy-efficient than an 'average' (grade 3) product while a grade 1 refrigerator is at least 35% more energy-efficient.)

Any performance drawback when it uses less energy?

Nil
Products are required to fulfill a range of performance requirements before they can display this label.

How to choose Room Coolers?

(1) Decide on category and feature you want - see Table 1.
(2) Choose the right cooling capacity to suit the size of your room.
(3) Use the energy label to help you select an energy-efficient model.
(4) Choose one of better efficiency grading.

Energy Saving Tips for Room Coolers...

(1) Use ventilation fan instead of room cooler when weather is not too hot.
(2) Set cooler to temperature you just feel comfortable, don't set it too cold.
(3) Keep windows and doors shut when cooler is running, and draw curtains or blinds to keep out sunlight.
