Hong Kong Energy Efficiency Labelling
Scheme for Compact Fluorescent Lamps
Since April 1996, you can find energy labels displayed on some popular
household electrical appliances in the market. These energy labels
provide the appliance's energy consumption and efficiency data to
the consumers.

What is a "Recognition
Type" Energy Label?
It looks like this: |
 |
|
| |
|
In December 1998, a new "Recognition Type" Energy Efficiency Labelling
Scheme has been launched for compact fluorescent lamps.
The "Recognition Type" energy labels do not provide any energy data
but instead, they recognize the labelled compact fluorescent lamps
have met the following minimum energy efficiency and performance requirements
of the labelling scheme: |
 |
the lamp meets the Scheme's
minimum luminous efficacy |
 |
the rated average life
of the lamp is not to be less than 8,000 hours |
 |
the lamp's light output
at 2,000 hours is not to be less than 78% of the initial output |
 |
the lamp complies with
the Electrical Products (Safety) Regulation and appropriate
international safety standards. |

| Why is it important to save energy? |
| |
 |
Fossil fuels reserves are
limited |
 |
Fuel burning leads to air
pollution and damages the environment |
 |
CO2 emission causes global
warming. |

| |
| How can compact fluorescent lamps
save energy? |
| |
Compact fluorescent lamps are miniature versions of fluorescent
lamps and have the advantage of consuming about 80% less electrical
power than incandescent lamps while producing comparable lighting
output. For example, a 100W incandescent lamp can be replaced by a
20W compact fluorescent lamps with comparable lighting output.
In addition, the life expectancy of compact fluorescent lamps is generally
about 8 to 10 times that of incandescent lamp. Besides covering the
cost of buying compact fluorescent lamps, using compact fluorescent
lamps will give you long term saving on your electricity bill and
a better living environment. |

| The Hong Kong Energy Efficiency
Labelling Scheme |
| |
The Energy Efficiency Labelling
Scheme is one of the many energy conservation initiatives that the
Government has adpoted.
Currently, five Energy Efficiency Labelling Schemes are being implemented,
covering household refrigerators, room coolers, washing machines,
compact fluorescent lamps and electric clothes dryers. |
