The need for change

The change in Hong Kong has been fully supported by the electrical trade. It has the following benefits:

a. A substantial percentage of electric cables used in Hong Kong are now imported from western countries. The new and harmonized cable colour system has already been adopted in these countries. The adoption of new cable colour system will ensure a stable and steady supply of cable to Hong Kong, prevent possible price fluctuation, and avoid longer delivery lead time. The change was proposed by the trade and the trade has widely consulted its members before determining to proceed with the change.

b. The old cable colour system in the British Standard has become obsolete since 1 April 2006. The new cable colour system will comply with the new British Standard as well as other international and national standards such as EN and IEC standards.

c. Currently, a substantial percentage of electrical equipment in Hong Kong is imported from the foreign countries. The adoption of new cable colour system can reduce possible electrical hazard on the connection of old coloured cables to the new equipment imported from these countries.

 

Remarks: - The general public will not need to change the existing cables of their fixed electrical installations to the new colour code.
  - Cables of the new colour code will be used for new electrical installations and addition or alteration work being carried out on the existing electrical installations.
  - The change will not entail any additional cost implication to the general public.
  - The change will only affect fixed electrical installations and will exclude any household appliances or electrical equipment that obtains electricity from a socket outlet via a plug.
