Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Scheme
for Registered Electrical Worker

• The Electrical Safety Advisory Committee (ESAC) suggested to EMSD in its meeting in September 2009 to set up a continuing development mechanism for Registered Electrical Worker (REW) with an aim to enhancing the standard of REW. After consultation with the trade, EMSD plans to implement the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Scheme for REW in 2012. The implementation of the CPD Scheme obtained the consent from the ESAC in its meeting in April 2011.

• The CPD Scheme will be put into operation on 1 January 2012. Under the CPD Scheme, REW applying for registration renewal on or after 1 January 2012 is required to have completed a training covering the following two modules before submitting the application:

  Module	Item	Content
  1	Legislative and Safety Requirements	Legislative requirements in Electricity Ordinance, Electricity (Registration) Regulations, and Electricity (Wiring) Regulations and safety requirements in conducting electrical work
  2	Technical Knowledge	Knowledge related to design, installation, maintenance, testing and commissioning of electrical installation

• Similar to the training arrangement for New Cable Colour Code, REW can choose to join any one of four types of training for the CPD Scheme, including:
  1. Trainings organized by EMSD (Please click here for the course details) or
     seminars organized by EMSD or jointly organized with other organizations;
  2. Training courses conducted by "Recognized Trainers" (Please click here for the course details [PDF format (64KB)] (Last updated on: 17/5/2012) (About 1-2 hours for each training module));

  3. Training provided at the EMSD Customer Service Office (to be available in January 2012); and
  4. Training materials provided in EMSD website and complete an assessment exercise personally in the Customer Services Office at EMSD Headquarters (Please click here to enter the webpage).

• The training shall be completed by REWs within 3 years before the expiry date of the current registration. When receiving the renewal application from REW, EMSD will check his CPD training record before processing the renewal application.

• The CPD Scheme applies to applicants of registration renewal only. Applicants of new registration or change-of-grade or additional permitted work applications need not complete the CPD training before submitting the application. However, the applicant will have to complete the CPD training in future for their registration renewal.
