Registered Electrical Workers Safety Competition 2009

  1. Introduction

    To arouse the safety awareness of the electrical workers, EMSD is organising the "Registered Electrical Workers Safety Competition" [PDF format (576KB)]. The competition aims to promote work safety messages to the electrical trade. To tie in with this competition, EMSD has produced a short video entitled "Electrical Work Safety" [WMV format (85.7MB)] for reference of electrical workers.

  3. Objectives

    1. To promote work safety culture among electrical workers
    2. To encourage electrical workers to observe safe electrical work requirements
    3. To award prizes to registered electrical workers who put a high premium on work safety and implement safety measures

  5. Format and Assessment

    The competition will be conducted in two stages.

    In the first stage, a written test will be held. Participants will answer multiple choice questions regarding safe electrical work. The 10 participants with the highest scores will enter the second stage.

    In the second stage, interviews will be conducted. The Adjudication Panel, which comprises 5 senior members from the electrical trade, will ask the participants questions on various safety aspects. Winners will be selected based on the participants¡¦ knowledge of the following subjects:

    1. Code of Practice for the Electricity (Wiring) Regulations (2009 Edition) (Code 4)
    2. Safe work procedures
    3. Personal protective equipment
    4. Leakage protection devices
    5. Work permit system
    6. Safe working environment
    7. Application of tools
    8. Emergency response

  7. Eligibility and Nomination

    Participants must be registered electrical workers in Hong Kong (regardless of the grades of work for which they are registered) and must be nominated by the registered electrical contractors or property management companies who employ them. Each company can nominate no more than 5 registered electrical workers. A separated nomination form should be used for each nomination.

    Nomination forms must be submitted to the Electricity Legislation Division, EMSD in person or by fax before the nomination deadline.

    The nomination deadline will be postponed to the next working day if typhoon signal No.8 or above, or BLACK rainstorm warning is issued.

    First Stage Written Test
    Date : 28 August 2009
    Time : 7:30 p.m.
    Venue : H.K. & Kowloon Electrical Engineering & Appliances Trade Workers Union
    3/F, Prosperity Centre, 982 Canton Road, Mongkok, Kowloon

    The written test will be postponed to 4 September 2009 if typhoon signal No. 8 or above, or BLACK rainstorm warning is issued.

    Qualified participants will be notified in writing. Participants who receive the written notice are advised to read the Instructions to Participants before they attend the written test.

    Second Stage Interview
    Date : 23 October 2009
    Venue : EMSD Headquarters

    Successful participants will be notified in writing by the end of September 2009.

    The prize presentation ceremony has been held during the Annual Technical Seminar on 27 November 2009. Names of the winners and the companies that employ them are published below:

  13. Rules and Conditions

    1. The Organiser reserves the right to change the rules, prizes and other arrangements of the competition without prior notice.
    2. Should any misleading or false information be found in the nomination form, the participant may be disqualified.
    3. EMSD staff and the family members of the adjudication panel are not allowed to participate in the competition.
    4. The Organiser reserves the right to make final decisions on matters or any disputes related to the competition.
    5. Winners may be interviewed by Electricity News or other media, if required.
    6. The Organiser and collaborating organisations may publish the results of the competition including the names of participants and the nominating companies in their publications or websites without prior notification.
    7. The participants¡¦ status as registered electrical workers will not be affected by the results of the competition.
    8. Answer sheets used and collected in the first stage written test will be destroyed after the competition.
