Requirements
on Registration of Lift/Escalator Engineers
The requirements
on the qualifications and experience for inclusion in the register of
lift engineers and the register of escalator engineers are detailed in
section 5(2) of the Lifts and Escalators (Safety) Ordinance (the Ordinance),
Chapter 327. The Ordinance can be purchased by following method, please

1. Qualifications
The minimum requirement
is a higher diploma or higher certificate in mechanical or electrical
or electronic or building services engineering from the former Hong
Kong Polytechnic, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University or a technical
institute approved by the Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services.
2. Working Experience/Training
The minimum requirement
is:
i. Completion
of an apprenticeship of not less than 2 years in mechanical or electrical
or electronic or building services engineering, and subsequent working
experience of not less than 3 years in the installation, commissioning,
testing and maintenance of lifts/escalators, or
ii. Working experience
of not less than 5 years in the installation, commissioning, testing
and maintenance of lifts/escalators.
The technical training
of the installation, commissioning, testing and maintenance of lifts/escalators
is provided by the registered lift/escalator contractors to their employees.
3. Written Examinations
Since early 1998,
written examinations for candidates applying for registration as lift/escalator
engineers have been arranged by the Examination Board formed with representatives
from this department and some local universities. Having passed the
examination, you may apply within 1 year for registration as lift/escalator
engineers (whichever appropriate) if you satisfy other application requirements.
You will be registered if you can pass the interview(s) conducted by
