The
next decade will see an increased focus on the environment
and sustainable development in Hong Kong. At EMSD, we are
playing an active role by working closely with the government,
providing the necessary technical and engineering support
to ensure the introduction of the most up-to-date and most
suitable new technologies, new installations and vehicles,
as well as exploring new and alternative forms of energy which
will contribute to a greener future and a better quality of
life for Hong Kong in the new millennium.
One
of our most long-standing activities in this area is the monitoring
of the electricity supply companies under the Scheme of Control
Agreements. Other areas where we are highly active is in the
implementation of the government's LPG vehicle initiative,
which is being introduced to reduce air pollution in the territory,
the introduction of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) programmes to
provide cleaner air and a healthier working environment for
Hong Kong's offices and public places including government
venues, and studies into the potential usage of renewable
energy in Hong Kong.
