Natural GasNatural gas is clean and environment-friendly with low emissions. Its use as an alternative fuel source for power generation and as a feedstock for towngas production reduces emissions, contributing to a better, cleaner environment.

Natural gas is mainly imported from 2 sources in Mainland to the Black Point and Castle Peak Power Stations for power generation. One source is the gas fields in the South China Sea via a 780-kilometre subsea pipeline and another one is the Second West-East Natural Gas Pipeline through Shenzhen Daichan Island to the 2 power stations. The liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Shenzhen Dapeng Bay supplies natural gas through a 93-kilometre subsea pipeline to Lamma Power Station for electricity generation. The LNG terminal also supplies natural gas through a 34-kilometre twin submarine pipeline to Tai Po plant for production of towngas. The two power companies can also purchase LNG from the international market directly and deliver to the offshore LNG terminal in the south-western waters of Hong Kong, and then supply natural gas to their power stations through two subsea pipelines (45-kilometre and 18-kilometre) for power generation.

As Hong Kong's Authority on gas safety, we are responsible for assessment, approval and monitoring of the natural gas supply facilities and pipelines.
