Carkey Aquarium Limited announced a recall of “JEBO” aquarium lighting. The “JEBO” aquarium lighting, which need to be recalled, with the model nos. Recall of Powerline Ethernet Adapters

Voluntary Recall of Aquarium Water Pumps

Johnson Wai Aquarium Supply Co., Ltd. announced a voluntary recall of two models of "Hydor" aquarium water pumps, Koralia 2 and Koralia 3. An Addendum to the Code of Practice for the Electricity (Wiring) Regulations (CoP) in relation to the new cable colour code (CCC) has been issued. The corresponding Gazette Notice was published on 23.3.2007.

Voluntary recall on 12-inch table fans

PCCW Limited has issued letters to its residential fixed telephone line customers concerned to initiate a voluntary recall of “LIKONE” (model: FT-30) 12-inch table fans. Some of these fans would pose hazard to users by possibly touching the fan blades and the moving parts inside the fan motor housings. New Cable Colour Code

From 1 July 2007, new colour cables can be used in fixed electrical installations in Hong Kong. EMSD has launched a webcorner where the trade can find updated information on the new cable colour code. There is also a training suite which provides an exercise on configuration of the new cable colour code for registered electrical workers.

Voluntary recall on mixers

Philips Electronics Hong Kong Ltd. announced a voluntary recall of the Philips Cucina HR 1565 mixers which were supplied between January and July 2005. These mixers, which were marked with the series code 04420 to 05170, may be accidentally activated by pressing the turbo button when the main switch of the mixer is at "0" position (i.e. at "Off" position). This may pose a hazard to the user when inserting or removing the beaters or the kneading hooks. Voluntary Inspection Programme for Residual Current Circuit Breakers

Schneider Electric (Hong Kong) Ltd. recently conducted a voluntary inspection programme for its Merlin Gerin C60H- and Square D QOE- residual current circuit breakers with overload protection (RCBO) which were supplied from January to December 2004. It was found that some of these RCBOs may not trip on earth leakage fault due to the non-conforming specification of a component. This may pose a risk of electric shock hazard to users. E&M Safety Competition Day cum Prizes Presentation for Web-based Safety Quiz

The 30-day Web-based Safety Quiz had been successfully completed with the participation of more than 45,000 students from over 200 primary schools. Results of the Safety Quiz can be found in the website of HK Education City (please click here for details). Six of the schools attained the highest scores in the Safety Quiz will take part in a final competition in the form of games and activities at an inter-school sports day event to be held on 30 April 2005 at the football pitch of the PCCW Staff Association in Causeway Bay.

Microsoft Corporation recently announced to voluntarily replace the power cord of Xbox video game systems supplied from November 2002 to October 2003. EMSD issued a press release to announce the voluntary free-of-charge inspection and preventive maintenance programme for enhancing public safety by the local supplier "Shell Electric Mfg. (Holdings) Co. Ltd." for 3 models of "SMC" 5-speed ceiling fan regulators. These regulators were supplied for use with "SMC" ceiling fans with model nos. K36, K48 and K56 respectively and were manufactured between 1997 and 1999. Due to construction defect, these fan regulators might pose potential fire hazard. EMSD issued a press release to announce the voluntary recall of a model of "SANYO" wall-mounted electric fans (model no.: EF-12KA) by SANYO Electric (Hong Kong) Ltd. These electric fans were supplied in the period between March 1999 and September 2000. A joint investigation of a fire incident by EMSD and the above agent revealed that the endurance of the internal cable connecting to the oscillatory fan head might not be adequate, thus posing a risk of short-circuit after prolonged use. EMSD issued a press release to announce the voluntary recall of a model of "De'Longhi" fan heaters (type no.: HBP832B; serial no.: 33111) supplied between December 2003 and January 2004 by "DL Trading Ltd.". A recent quality check by the above supplier revealed that the internal wires of the fan heaters could be subject to undue wear and tear during normal oscillatory movement of the heater body, which might pose fire risk to users. EMSD issued a press release to advise members of the public, for safety reasons, to stop using those Christmas lighting chains which do not bear any product information. Recently, EMSD has carried out inspections to the supply outlets of Christmas lighting chains. It was found that the lighting chains being supplied in the market were, in general, in compliance with the relevant safety requirements of the Electrical Products (Safety) Regulation. However, a few unbranded lighting chains did not comply with the requirements, such as inadequate insulation and/or fitted with two-pin plugs, were found. Although there is no immediate danger in association with the use of these unbranded Christmas lighting chains, no reliable protection is offered for use. In the recent safety tests arranged by the Consumer Council on some models of Christmas lighting chains which did not bear any product information, it was found that they failed to comply with some requirements of the relevant safety standards. The test results were published in the December issue of the "Choice" magazine by the Consumer Council.

These chargers were supplied with 4 models of Sony Ericsson mobile phones (model nos.: T68i, T300, T310 and T610), and were also supplied as standalone accessories. EMSD issued a press release to announce the voluntary recall of a model of electronic insect killers (model no. YW-936A/IK1600) supplied by E.P.S.A. Corporation Ltd. from April to August 2003. A recent safety test by EMSD revealed that the plastic material of the insect killers did not have adequate resistance to heat and fire, thus posing potential fire hazard when excessive spark was generated during electrocution of insects. EMSD issued a press release to announce the voluntary recall of a model of XCC electric Shabu Shabu hot pots (model no.: CRTX-1000) offered by PCCW as free gifts to their customers during the period from December 2002 to January 2003 for subscribing to the company's "Voice/Fax/Web/3-in-1" package and completing the questionnaires. The flexible cord connector of the hot pots did not have adequate electric insulating strength and might break under impact, posing an electric shock hazard to the users. In response to recent newspaper report on electrical product safety, EMSD would like to provide an explanation on the subject. The safety of household electrical products supplied in HKSAR, irrespective of the country of origin, is governed by the Electrical Products (Safety) Regulation (EPSR). Non-compliant household electrical products, which had been recalled since the introduction of EPSR, included products that were of mainland and overseas brands.

EMSD issued a press release to announce the voluntary maintenance programme for a model of TOSHIBA 15" TV sets (model no. 15V11B) carried out by the local supplier, Toshiba Hong Kong Ltd. The serial numbers of the concerned TV sets are 102-2308401 to 102-2309400, 102-2417501 to 102-2418500, and 102-2Y37701 to 102-2Y38700 respectively. The supplier discovered that the insulation of an internal wire of these TV sets might be damaged during the course of the assembly work in the factory. As a result, the antenna/AV terminals might become live, thus posing an electric shock hazard to the users. The Consumer Council recently arranged safety tests on 15 models of DVD players and 4 models of water-filtering type vacuum cleaners. The test results revealed that the safety levels of these electrical appliances were generally satisfactory. For some models of the DVD players, there is room for improvement in markings and creepage distances/clearances. As for vacuum cleaners, markings and construction of automatic cord reels could be improved. The test results were published in the April issue of the "Choice" magazine by the Consumer Council.

EMSD issued a press release to announce the voluntary recall of the power cords for 4 models of "SANYO" portable CD radio cassette recorders, namely MCD-ZX700F, MCD-ZX390F, MCD-ZX350F and MCD-Z89F respectively, by their service agent "Sanyo Technical Service (H.K.) Ltd.". Investigation revealed that, under rare circumstances, the front cover of the plug fitted to such a power cord might become loosened from the base when the plug was being pulled out from a mains socket outlet. This could expose the live parts inside the plug and give rise to the risk of electric shock to the users. Members of the public are advised to stop using the power cords immediately and to return them to the agent for replacement as soon as practicable. American Power Conversion (APC Hong Kong) recently conducted a voluntary recall on 2 models of their uninterruptible power supply (UPS) sets, namely BK350EI and BK500EI. The first 6 characters of the serial numbers of the affected UPS sets are within the following ranges:

• AB0048 to AB0251
• BB0104 to BB0251
• JB0125 to JB0251

Due to the failure of an internal component, the above UPS sets exhibited signs of overheating, and may pose a fire hazard. Members of the public are advised to stop using these UPS sets immediately and to contact the above supplier for free replacement. EMSD issued a press release to announce the voluntary recall of a model of "Philips" SL Electronic Prismatic energy saving lamps manufactured between January 2000 and April 2001. The lamps concerned may have uneven application of glue for anchoring the glass bulb to the plastic mount, thus posing risk of detachment of the glass bulb. EMSD issued a press release to announce the voluntary recall of "Winnie The Pooh" table lamps offered by T&G (H.K.) Holding Ltd. as free gifts to their customers for the purchase of "Braun" Thermoscans or "Braun" D15511 Power Toothbrushes. The earthing wire of the table lamp concerned is not fixed in a secured manner. In case of loosening of the earthing wire, the table lamp may not have adequate protection against electric shock. Moreover, a non-compliant fuse has been fitted to the plug of the lamp, which may not be able to provide proper protection in case of an electrical short-circuit fault. EMSD issued a press release to announce the voluntary recall of a model of AC adaptors for the external speaker sets that are supplied with Hewlett-Packard (HP) desktop computers. According to the supplier, Philips Electronics, the T-junction plug of these adaptor's power cords was not grounded and hence posed potential risk of electric shock to users. EMSD issued a press release to announce the voluntary recall of the chargers that are supplied with certain models (including "Mars", "Eclipse", and "Neptune") of "Trium" mobile phones. According to the supplier, the top casings of the chargers may be separated from their 3-plug-pin bases when the chargers are being pulled out from mains socket outlets. Live parts inside the chargers may be exposed, and there may be risk of electric shock to users. The chargers are marked with "MADE IN PHILIPPINES" and "MODEL: TA3061-UK" with the first 4 digits of their serial numbers counting in increasing order from 0105. A "Notice of Exemption" regarding the temperature and pressure relief valve for unvented thermal storage type electric water heaters was published in Notice No. 1420 in the Government Gazette dated 8 March 2002.

The Consumer Council has arranged safety tests on 3 brands of energy saving devices. The test results revealed that all of these devices failed to fully comply with some requirements, which were selected from the relevant safety standards, in respect of marking and instructions, construction, supply connection and flexible cords and resistance of plastic materials to heat, etc. The test results were published in the February issue of the "Choice" magazine by the Consumer Council.

EMSD issued a press release to announce the voluntary recall of the flexible electrical cord set of four models of "SANKI" SK-300, SK-480, SK-3.0A1 & SK-3.0A2 hot pot and two models of "SANKI" SK-50A & SK-70A rice cooker. The concerned products were supplied from June to September this year. It was discovered that a non-compliant fuse, marked with "FUSE DL 13A BS1362" in red, was fitted to the plug of the flexible cord set for the concerned products which might lead to potential hazard in case of an electrical short-circuit fault. EMSD issued a press release to announce the voluntary recall of a model of 12-inch electric box fans (model no."KYT-30" and without brand name). These fans were sold at "Mega Warehouse" in August 2001. It was discovered that a non-compliant fuse, marked with "FUSE DL 13A BS1362" in red, was fitted to the plug of the fans that might lead to potential hazard in case of a short circuit. It was found that the resistances to heat and fire of the insulating materials for some components were insufficient. Besides, the fan guards might also be easily detached from the fans, exposing the fan blades and some basic insulation materials to the users.
