Owners of Dai Pai Dong and Cooked Food Stalls should pay attention to gas safety when using gas appliances.  Owners should read and understand the user manuals provided by the appliances manufacturers.  If gas appliance is connected to low pressure flexible gas tubing, the type of the tubing should be approved by EMSD.  Also, gas appliance must be installed, tested, replaced and fixed by registered gas installers employed by registered gas contractors.

Owners Should :
  • use piped town gas or piped LPG as fuel as far as possible and use low pressure gas appliances and fittings;
  • only when no piped-gas supply is available should the owner choose to use LPG cylinders.  LPG cylinders should be placed inside a purpose designed chamber.  If it is not practicable to build a chamber, the cylinders should be placed at a well-ventilated metal box or cage without blocking any access;
  • use of genuine parts supplied by the original gas appliance manufacturers; if elect to use domestic gas appliances, only use those approved by EMSD bearing a「GU」mark;
  • according to gas appliance manufacturers’ user instructions, use utensils with appropriate diameter and place the utensils at the center of the burner as far as possible;
  • make sure that there is adequate ventilation by turning on mechanical ventilation fan;
  • use appropriate tools and methods to ignite gas appliances.  Should ignite the pilot flame first, then turn on the main burner valve.  Do not ignite the gas appliance after 2 failure attempts as gas could have accumulated near the burner head, resulting in flash fire;
  • stop using a gas appliance if it was found that the flame would inadvertently extinguish, call registered gas contractor to follow up;
  • regularly clean and maintain the gas appliance to prevent debris from blocking the burner head, preventing the normal operation of the gas appliance.  If there is a spill from cooking, one should clean the burner head as soon as possible;
  • check to see if the flexible gas tubing is damaged or expired (check the expiry date printed on the tubing) and whether the tubing connection is loose.  If noticed any abnormality, one should arrange a registered gas contractor to fix or replace the said tubing;
  • use metallic pipe to collect to fixed gas appliances;
  • arrange a registered gas contractor to carry out safety inspection once every 12 months;
  • turn off all gas appliance before replacing LPG cylinders.  Do not replace LPG cylinders in the vicinity of a flame and do not smoke while doing so;
  • place LPG cylinders at an upright position inside a purpose designed chamber or a well-ventilated metal box or cage.

Owners Should NOT :
  • place any item not supplied by the original gas appliance manufacturer;
  • use oversize plates or pans which extend over the edge of the gas appliance to prevent heat of gas appliance;
  • put any flammable item or container (e.g. newspaper, pesticide, aerosol can and cigarette lighter, etc.) near the cassette cooker so as to avoid the danger of causing a fire or an explosion;
  • use gas appliance in un-ventilated environment to prevent the accumulation of carbon monoxide, which could result in carbon monoxide poisoning;
  • use gas appliance or phone or turn on electrical switch when there is a suspected gas leak;
  • leave gas appliance switched on unattended;
  • alter the flame failure device;
  • use rubber flexible gas tubing over 2 meters long;
  • place LPG cylinders in public area or on walkways;
  • store LPG cylinders (including empty cylinders) with a total nominal water capacity of over 130 litres (approximately 50 kg);
  • use expired flexible gas tubing or regulators.
