The total air-conditioned area of the non-residential portion of the development is around 1.73 million square meters (m2). Total cooling capacity is 284 megawatt of refrigeration (MWr) of which the capacity is sufficient to cater the air-conditioning demand for about forty 30-storey commercial buildings. Around 40 kilometers (km) long of underground chilled water pipes can provide chilled water up to fifty consumer buildings in the vicinity of Kai Tak development. To cope with the latest development of the Kai Tak Development area, the construction of additional district cooling plant has been commenced. The additional plant can provide cooling capacity of 178 megawatt of refrigeration (MWr).
Upon full completion of the project, the total cooling capacity of district cooling system at Kai Tak is about 462 megawatt of refrigeration (MWr) including about 63 kilometers (km) of seawater and chilled water piping networks, to serve about 2.54 million square meter (m2) of non-domestic air-conditioned floor area. When the system is fully operated, it is estimated to save about 138 million kWh a year, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 42,000 households, with a corresponding reduction of 96,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per annum.
Kai Tak District Cooling System (KTDCS) has commenced its operation in phases since February 2013 to cope with the time of development in Kai Tak development area, and started to supply chilled water to consumer buildings as planned. The current consumer buildings include the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, Ching Long Shopping Centre, Trade and Industry Tower, SKH Holy Cross Primary School, PLK Stanley Ho Sau Nan Primary School, EMSD Headquarters, Hong Kong Children's Hospital, MTR Kai Tak Station and Sung Wong Toi Station, Cognitio College (Kowloon), Kowloon East Regional Headquarters cum Ngau Tau Kok Divisional Police Station, Inland Revenue Centre, Administration and Ventilation Buildings of Central Kowloon Route, Kai Tak Sport Park, Animal Management and Animal Welfare Building Complex, and private commercial development such as shopping malls and offices.
In addition, in response to the increasing cooling demand within the development, the newly constructed District Cooling System Plant no.3 was put into use by phase in 2024, in order to provide chilled water to the non-domestic buildings and public facilities.
In 2025, the newly constructed New Acute Hospital, school, and other non-domestic developments will be completed successively and connected to KTDCS.
