With the adoption of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol in October 2016, many countries have implemented control measures to gradually reduce the use of "high" global warming potential (GWP) greenhouse gases by 80 to 85% by mid 2030s to late 2040s. There has been an increasingly widespread use of eco-friendly refrigerants with "low" GWP in central air-conditioning and refrigeration systems as well as household appliances around the world in recent years. However, some of them are flammable in nature. In view of Hong Kong's crowded and densely populated environment with numerous high-rise buildings, special attention should be paid to the use of flammable refrigerants.
