Review of Energy Efficiency Grading Standards
Background
A review of the grading standards of room air conditioners, refrigerating appliances, and washing machines with a washing capacity at or under 7 kg was completed in late 2014. In reviewing the grading standards of these products, due regard had been given to such factors as the distribution of the products among various existing grades; grading systems adopted overseas; development of testing standards; and energy saving potential arising from further tightening of the grading standards, etc. Full implementation of the new standards commenced on 25 November 2015, after which the three products to be supplied into the market must bear the “U1 energy label” under the new energy efficiency grading standards.

As the calculation method for room air conditioners is revised in the existing grading standard, the past and existing grading information of room air conditioners cannot be compared directly. As a general guideline in choosing a room air conditioner, split type unit is more energy efficient than window type unit. In addition, an inverter type unit is more energy-saving than a non-inverter type unit.
