Fuel Consumption Benchmarking

Fuel consumption benchmarking of vehicle is the process of accounting for and comparing a vehicle’s current fuel-efficiency with its fuel consumption baseline, or comparing a vehicle’s fuel consumption with that of similar types of vehicles.

Vehicle’s fuel-efficiency can be determined by calculating the fuel consumption indicator and comparing it with others. The fuel consumption indicator is a measure of the level of fuel consumption, often expressed in terms of fuel consumed per mile or kilometre, enabling one to determine the ranking of vehicle’s fuel-efficiency among other vehicles. In recent years, there’s an increasing trend to correlate the fuel consumption indicator with greenhouse gas (commonly CO 2) emission.

The EMSD has compiled the energy consumption indicators for private cars and light goods vehicles and developed benchmarking tools for this application. Take a look and try them out.
