The Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) Safety Standards
for Household Electrical Products
In general, the suppliers should ensure that their household electrical products conform to the latest requirements of the applicable International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) safety standards (or other equivalent international standards such as European Community (EU) safety standards) unless otherwise stated in the Electrical Products (Safety) Regulation. In addition, the electromagnetic field (EMF) generated by household electrical products shall not produce radiation which is likely to cause danger to the general public.
EMSD has completed consultation with the trade on adoption of EMF safety standards for household electrical products. Agreement on the implementation time frame has been reached. The details are shown in the table below:
Product Type | Applicable International Safety Standards | Implementation Time Frame |
---|---|---|
Household Electrical Products |
EN 62233* or EN 50366 Household and similar electrical appliances - Electromagnetic fields- Methods for evaluation and measurement |
Starting from 1 January 2011, suppliers shall import electrical products that comply with the relevant electromagnetic field’s safety standards. |
IEC 62233 Measurement methods for electromagnetic fields of household appliances and similar apparatus with regard to human exposure |
* The EU electromagnetic field’s standard EN 62233 was published in May 2008 and is scheduled to formally replace the existing electromagnetic field’s standard EN 50366 in December 2012. According to the requirements of IEC 62233, this standard does not apply to audio and video electrical products, information technology equipment as well as luminaires. The EMF generated by these products must comply with the relevant requirements in the following safety standards:
