The Project Division saw a decrease in revenue last year as unforeseen circumstances disrupted a few major projects, making it difficult to achieve the budget. As projects gather momentum in the current fiscal year, business in 2004/05 should be stable.

Among the Division's achievements in 2003/04 were new contracts for replacement work on the Cross Harbour Tunnel traffic control and surveillance system and lighting system. Another two mobile X-ray inspection systems, which the Division helped procure in 2003/04, were successfully commissioned and put into service at container ports. Additional systems will also be required when the border points at the new Shenzhen Western Corridor Bridge to Shekou opens for operation in 2006.

The Fire Services Department's Third-Generation Mobilising system has reached the testing and commissioning stage and the Division will continue to provide technical support to the client. Other on-going work includes the modernisation and upgrading of the CCTV and sailing information systems at the Macau and China ferry terminals.

Remote imaging is one of the Division's strengths in technology application. Building on its past successes with the automatic licence plate recognition system, various tunnel and traffic surveillance systems, fixed and mobile X-ray inspection systems and the recent Shan Pui River crocodile monitoring facility, it is now in discussions with Marine Police about using high-power thermal imaging to support the Coastal Surveillance System which detects irregular activities at sea. It is also working with the Trade and Industry Department to explore opportunities for involvement in setting up the IT and communications systems for the World Trade Organisation's 6th Ministerial Conference, to be held in Hong Kong in 2005.

The Division has also proposed that the Transport Department apply state-of-the-art server technology to the storage and retrieval of images collected from the hundreds of surveillance cameras on highways throughout the territory. The technology should significantly improve the speed and efficiency of image retrieval.

At the time of writing, the Division has recently established a team of building services engineers to provide professional design and consultancy services for various building services installations. All colleagues in the Division have also been working together to tackle TQM initiatives to improve overall service quality and efficiency.
