The Municipal Sector Division had a stable year during 2004/05. It also won two district-based outsourced contracts, one from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in North District and the other from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department in Tuen Mun, once again demonstrating its competitiveness.

The Division further boosted the stability of its business by successfully concluding a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with the Marine Department to assist it in operating its Vessel Traffic Surveillance System. The SLA will come into effect in 2006/07 and run for five and a half years.

During the year the Division took over both the operation and maintenance work of the Fu Shan Crematorium under the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, and is likely to take on the operation and maintenance of other crematoriums during 2005. As replacement systems at crematoriums are increasingly computerised and automated, the Division has stepped up staff training to keep abreast of the new technology.

The Division also provided technical support to clients in taking over a number of new venues in 2004/05. These include the Ma On Shan Complex comprising a public library and an indoor games hall, as well as the Tai Po Complex that comes with a market, public library and an indoor games hall.

In the summer of 2004, the Division supported the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in resolving the "blood worms" issue by promptly inspecting the filtration systems in all public swimming pools in Hong Kong, followed by a thorough cleansing of the filtration systems at some of the major pools. The work was done in close collaboration with colleagues from the Transport, Security and Central Services Division. It demonstrates our reliable technical support to client departments under crisis situations.

The expiry of the Technical Services Agreement between the Government and PCCW in 2006 is expected to open some engineering business at various performance venues to outsourcing. The Division, already expert in stage lighting systems, is preparing itself for the new opportunity and will be exploring its potential to bid for new business in this area.

Looking ahead, the Division is cautiously optimistic about its business prospects in 2005/06.
