Operation and Maintenance Support for
Yau Ma Tei Theatre

The conversion of two graded historic buildings, the Yau Ma Tei Theatre and adjacent Red Brick Building, into a theatre for Chinese opera marks a milestone in Hong Kong’s efforts to revitalise historic architecture for indigenous arts development. Dedicated to promoting Cantonese opera and in particular to the nurturing of young talent, the new venue opened in July 2012 officially. It consists of a 300-seat theatre, function rooms for rehearsals and workshops, and other supporting facilities.

To support the theatre in serving the community, EMSD has taken up the operation and maintenance services of various engineering systems, covering electrical, mechanical, air-conditioning and building services, as well as stage lighting systems, for both venues.

Accompanied by EMSD management and Ms. Lau Siu-mui, Lily, Manager (Yau Ma Tei Theatre) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Mr. Wai Chi-sing, Permanent Secretary for Development (Works) of Development Bureau visited Yau Ma Tei Theatre in mid July to have a better understanding of its facilities and the development of indigenous arts and the venue.
