Towards a Green Organisation -
Draping EMSD Headquarters in Greenery

The vertical greening project at the EMSD Headquarters entrance piazza, which has been one of the winning projects in the Architectural Services Department Annual Award 2012, is the most recent green initiative of the department. The system applied the concept of ground-level planters onto a vertical wall. The system was designed and set up by the Architectural Services Department as a pilot to demonstrate government’s commitment to sustainable development. The vertical greening was a further step by EMSD after the greening of its roof systems at its Headquarters Building, to bring nature back into the city.

The system consists of greenery on pre-vegetated panels affixed to five structural walls covering a total wall area of around 200 m². The modular design allows changing the layout pattern or plant species simply by container replacement. The vegetation selected was evergreen slow growing species with ease of maintenance and suitable for the weather in Hong Kong. The greenery is watered automatically by a set of covered drip lines controlled by a solar-powered automatically controlled system. In addition to improving the aesthetic appeal, increasing urban biodiversity, improving air quality and help reducing the urban heat island effect, the system has become a new attraction of the EMSD Headquarters Education Path for promoting sustainable development technology.
