State-of-the-art Training Facility Aesthetic and Clean Energy Solution for a Museum Green Solution to Organic Waste Intelligent Road Network
 

State-of-the-art Training Facility

In 2007, we transformed a conventional training facility at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital into a comprehensive Minimal Access Surgery Training Centre within five months. The Centre features a simulated endo-lap operating theatre where six teams of trainees can be coached simultaneously, and a 100-seat lecture room equipped with state-of-the-art IT and audiovisual systems that can broadcast real-time the surgical demonstrations taking place in the simulation operating theatre, enabling distance training and sharing of knowledge. This is particularly useful to international conferences and video conferences.

Acting as project manager, we worked hand-in-hand with the Hospital Authority and its contractors to ensure timely completion. The client enjoyed the convenience of one-stop solution and a state-of-the-art training facility that also boosts Minimal Access Surgery locally and in the region.

Aesthetic and Clean Energy Solution for a Museum

Facilitating clients to generate and use renewable energy is one of our priorities. An innovative renewable energy project for the Leisure and Cultural Services Department was the installation of a grid-connected photovoltaic system, in the shape of the client's logo, ten metres outer diameter, which blends naturally with the photovoltaic panels, on a sloped site at the Museum of Coastal Defence. The system has a maximum power output of 7.8 kW, generating clean energy for the museum.

The project illustrates how technology combined with creativity can produce an engineering solution that is practical, environmental and aesthetic, and is a positive and highly visible example in clean energy application. It is another success for the client which has already adopted many green measures at other venues, while the Hong Kong Science Museum and the Hong Kong Museum of Art have also implemented renewable energy systems.

Green Solution to Organic Waste

To support the Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian Events held in Hong Kong in 2008, we have been entrusted by the Environmental Protection Department to design, construct, and operate a pilot Animal Waste Composting Plant at Ngau Tam Mei with a capacity of 20 tonnes per day to handle all the horse wastes generated from the Events.

The treatment processes comprise pretreatment, in-vessel rotary aerobic composting, and compost curing. After treatment, the waste will become mature compost that can be used in organic farming for fruits and vegetables as well as fertiliser in landscape application.

The plant also has a number of "green" systems, such as those for waste heat recovery, water re-use and deodorisation, for recycling and reusing of useful resources as well as improving the environment. Being the project manager, we have been supporting the client from feasibility study, detailed design, tender specification preparation, tendering, to contract management including site supervision, testing, commissioning and the initial two years' trial operation. The plant helps reduce the need for landfill space for solid waste management in Hong Kong. The technologies used are also applicable to food and other organic wastes treatment. This is a first step in organic waste treatment in support of the Action Blue Sky, and has potential for further development in the future.

Intelligent Road Network

The opening of the Hong Kong - Shenzhen Western Corridor (HK-SWC) in July 2007 and the partial opening of Tsing Sha Control Area in March 2008 were significant and we played a supportive role to clients in both projects. In addition to providing professional advice on design and maintenance of E&M systems as well as electronic Traffic Control and Surveillance Systems (TCSS), we also assisted the clients in testing and commissioning of the systems, and provide on-going operation and maintenance of the government E&M facilities at HK-SWC, as well as services to monitor the Management, Operation and Maintenance (MOM) contractor of Tsing Sha Control Area.

Working closely with clients, we facilitated the introduction and smooth implementation of state-of-the-art technology in TCSS design that is the first of its kind in Hong Kong. Two examples are the Rule-based Traffic Control Computer System that generates traffic plans to suit different traffic situations and weather conditions, and the Self-healing Optical Ring High Speed Network for data, voice and digital CCTV transmission. With these systems and applications which enable ease of future expansion, Hong Kong is well positioned to become a city with an intelligent road network.
