The Vehicle Engineering Division provides services to more than 70 government departments and autonomous bodies, serving a fleet of over 7,000 vehicles of all makes and models.

Professional services include vehicle maintenance and repair, recovery, customised vehicle procurement and body modification, and a comprehensive range of other vehicle-related services such as maintaining detailed vehicle service records, disposal of unserviceable vehicles and advising customers on vehicle accident and claim assessments.

The division's workshops at Caroline Hill Road on Hong Kong Island and Ma Tau Kok Road in Kowloon, together with four other strategically located depots, offer vehicle maintenance services throughout Hong Kong. A 24-hour vehicle recovery service and support for special events is also available.

The division's vehicle maintenance programme is designed to ensure that the government fleet is efficient and safe for use at all times, with the emphasis on fault prevention. The division works closely with the Government Land Transport Agency to procure and modify general and special purpose vehicles to suit the user's individual needs, taking into account policy, legislation, technical feasibility and safety considerations. It takes care of all the complicated procedures of tendering, technical evaluation and quality monitoring on behalf of customers.

It played a role in many significant events in Hong Kong during 1997/98. It ensured the smooth operation of the government's land transport fleet for hundreds of dignitaries from all over the world during the handover ceremony in June/July, as well as the World Bank Conference in November 1997. It also took part in the liquefied petroleum gas vehicle trial schemes for both taxis and government vehicles which commenced in November 1997.

Given the frequent interface between this division and individual vehicle users, customer service is a key area for continuous improvement. Its refurbished reception offices are designed to give maximum comfort and convenience to customers and are manned by courteous front-line staff. As an added service to the community, it also provides advisory services on vehicle repairs, maintenance and replacement to subvented welfare organisations.
