The General Engineering Services Division provides four main services. It operates, monitors and maintains the electrical, mechanical, air-conditioning, electronic and building services systems and equipment at government buildings with resident staff . Additionally, it maintains electrical, mechanical, air-conditioning, electronic and building services systems and equipment with visiting staff. It provides project management of building services installations in leased accommodation, conducts alteration and improvement works and plans refurbishment projects in government buildings. It also provides engineering services for the day to day maintenance, routine inspection and testing, fault and complaint attendance, minor repairs, term contract management and standard stores management for electrical installations.
Its major customers are the Government Property Agency, Architectural Services Department and the Judiciary.
Maintenance of lifts and escalators, air-conditioning systems, lighting installations, emergency generators, water pumping systems, burglar alarm and security systems, fire services installations and town gas installations account for the bulk of the division's work. In 1997/98, the division provided maintenance services to more than 1,800 lifts and 320 escalators for various government departments.
During 1997/98 the division undertook several significant tasks. Following the change of sovereignty in July 1997, military camps were taken over by the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The division continued to provide operation and maintenance services for six months and during the period, conducted a series of training courses for the PLA to ensure the smooth transfer of services. The services and training were highly appreciated by the PLA.
To help the community facilities comply with the latest fire services requirements, the division has started to upgrade fire services installations at 237 child care centres. The programme is scheduled to be completed by 2000.
As a result of the increasing emphasis on fire safety, the division will be responsible for carrying out periodic inspections for all government owned and leased buildings in a five-year cyclical programme to comply with statutory requirements.
The division will also be responsible for the upgrading of fire services installations work in all 225, pre-1973 government buildings. These, together with the recent handing over of two major new government venues (namely the North Point Government Offices of Government Property Agency and Government Logistic Centre of Government Supplies Department) to the division for operation and maintenance services, will boost the division's business next year.
