In our last issue we reported that EMSD was well on target, with
the establishment of our Environmental Management System to receive
ISO 14001 certification. We are pleased to report that all 13 divisions
who applied for certification have now received their certificates.
This has been followed with corporate recognition and we were very
proud to receive our certificate at the end of October.
ISO 14001 provides
worldwide recognition that our environmental management policies
and programmes are fully in line with international environmental
The 5-S Initiative
5-S, which encourages good office practices and working habits as
well as a positive working attitude was introduced last year as
part of our Total Quality Management Programme. The implementation
of 5-S has greatly increased office efficiency with clearer, tidier
and more organised work practices. Twenty-three working teams took
part in a 5-S competition during the year with 8 teams winning the
race for the best results.
Our Departmental Training Plan was shortlisted as one of five finalists
in the Best Practices in HRD Award 2000 contest organised by the
Civil Service Training and Development Institute. Together with
the other four finalists we made a presentation to the judges, winning
the Bronze Prize for our business focused training services. This
award recognises EMSD's commitment to staff development, which provides
an excellent springboard for our future development.
