In recent years, the EMSD has been actively integrating environmental protection and innovative technologies into its E&M solutions. Its collaborations with client departments on developing carbon reduction and efficiency enhancement projects have gained wide recognition from various sectors and won multiple awards.

High Efficiency Air-conditioning Chiller Replacement Project Received More Accolades

To support the global effort in combating climate change, the EMSD is committed to implementing green solutions and has introduced the high efficiency air-conditioning chillers using a new eco-friendly hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerant, R1233zd, for the Tuen Mun Hospital. R1233zd is a non-flammable refrigerant with low toxicity. It enables more stable operation of chillers and contributes to energy saving and emission reduction. Thanks to its extremely low global warming potential (GWP), R1233zd effectively mitigates the negative impact of refrigerant use on global warming. Since the commissioning of the new chillers, electricity consumption has been significantly reduced by 26% as compared with the old facilities, contributing to an annual saving of approximately 2.8 million kWh of electricity, which is equivalent to a reduction of about 1 950 tonnes of carbon emissions. Implemented by the EMSD in collaboration with the Hospital Authority (HA), the project demonstrated outstanding performance and earned multiple accolades. Further to last year’s American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Hong Kong Chapter Technology Award 2024, this year it won the ASHRAE Region XIII Technology Award 2024 in the category of “Health Care Facilities (Existing)”, and an Honourable Mention in the ASHRAE Technology Awards 2025 at Society Level. The relevant case study was also published in the ASHRAE Journal (April 2025 Issue) to share the success with the international community.

BIM Bot Won Gold Award at the BIM Automation Arena

BIM Bot, an AI chatbot developed by the EMSD leveraging on the innovative “Application of AI Large Language Models (LLMs) in Building Information Modelling Data Exchange”, won a Gold Award in the Generative AI – Corporation category at the BIM Automation Arena 2025 organised by the Hong Kong Institute of Building Information Modelling. BIM Bot can answer users’ enquiries on Building Information Modelling – Asset Management (BIM-AM), covering BIM-AM Standards and Guidelines, and handover, acceptance and upkeep guidelines. Employing advanced open-source LLMs, the chatbot provides quick and accurate answers to enquiries about asset naming conventions, modelling requirements, asset information requirements, colour coding and tagging requirements, thereby saving time searching through large volumes of documents, improving work efficiency, ensuring compliance with standards and facilitating knowledge transfer within the Department.
