Achieving Excellence

Aiming for OHSAS 18001 Corporate Certification
Building on our achievements as pioneers in Hong Kong with corporate ISO 9001 quality certification and ISO 14001 environmental certification for our management systems, operational practices and policies, our goal is to round off our quality practices with OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series) certification, by the end of 2001. The OHSAS 18001 system will establish a culture of continuous improvement in staff safety and working practices whilst also ensuring that customers will benefit from trouble free and constantly improving services.

As the OHSAS 18001 system is relatively new in Hong Kong, a consultant has been working with the individual business units since the end of 2000 to develop their OHSAS 18001 systems. The plan is to develop and implement systems for the nine business units over the next few months to obtain corporate certification in the final quarter of 2001. Achieving OHSAS 18001 certification will not only ensure that our Safety Management Systems comply with international standards, it will also cement our role as a responsible corporate citizen and a leader in occupational health and safety practices within the local community.

Industry Recognition
While the winning of awards is not an end in itself, it is always gratifying to receive the recognition of our peers in the community. We have won several Awards in a number of different areas recently. The first of these was the Hong Kong Print Awards 2000 for our Annual Report last year. We also received a Merit Certificate in the Best Environmental Reporting Award, Hong Kong Eco-Business Award for our first Environmental Report, which was produced to encourage an awareness and commitment towards green and environmentally friendly practices.

Two awards on Quality Service Enhancement were also received from the Civil Service Bureau under their Customer Service Award Scheme last year. Held to promote a customer focused culture within the civil service, our team from Transport, Security and Central Services Division won a merit award for their responsive and comprehensive electronics maintenance and technical support services to the Fire Services Department; and our Energy & Environmental Management Team from the Health Sector Division took the award for their work on energy conservation and management in Hong Kong’s hospitals.
