Second phase of Mandatory Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme comes into operation on 19 March 2010
The 2nd phase of the Mandatory Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme (MEELS) comes into operation today (March 19) with a grace period of 18 months. Please click here for the press release.
For implementation of the 2nd phase of the MEELS, the Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services has revised an approved Code of Practice on Energy Labelling of Products under the Energy Efficiency (Labelling of Products) Ordinance. OSRAM offers free replacement for five models of compact fluorescent lamps
EMSD has served a notice under the Energy Efficiency (Labelling of Products) Ordinance to Osram Prosperity Company Limited (OSRAM) to remove the reference numbers (L090609, L090610, L090611, L091205 and L091206) of the five “OSRAM” compact fluorescent lamp models (DULUXSTAR 20W/827 E27, DULUXSTAR 20W/840 E27, DULUXSTAR 20W/865 E27, DULUXSTAR 20W/827 B22d and DULUXSTAR 20W/865 B22d) with effect from 5 March 2010. As a result, these models are not allowed to be supplied in Hong Kong. Please click here to see the press release. OSRAM has initiated a free replacement scheme for the concerned products. Recall of 3 Models of "British Design" Extension Units
EMSD announced a mandatory recall of 3 models “British Design” extension units supplied by Phos Trading Company Ltd. The models of these “British Design” extension units are UK104S, UK03 and UK06 which were supplied through DSC shops between October 2009 and January 2010. The extension units might have overheating problem during use, posing a risk of fire hazard to users. Consumers are advised to stop using the extension units immediately and return them to the supplier for refund. Unauthorized Operation of Amusement Rides in
"Long Yuen Wetland Farm"
Ho Sheung Heung, Sheung Shui
Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) has recently issued closure orders to three unauthorized amusement rides operating in “Long Yuen Wetland Farm”, Ho Sheung Heung, Sheung Shui. The three amusement rides are named as “Mini-rickshaw”, “Waterball” and “Battery-powered Motocross All-Terrain Vehicle”. The design and operation of these three amusement rides have not been approved by EMSD. EMSD considers that these devices do not have adequate safety provision for protecting the safety of passengers and remind members of the public not to use them. General Electric International Operations Co., Inc. offers free replacement for five models of compact fluorescent lamps
EMSD has served a notice under the Energy Efficiency (Labelling of Products) Ordinance to General Electric International Operations Co., Inc (GEIOC) to remove the reference numbers (L090184, L090187, L090188, L090192 and L090695) of the five “GE” compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) models (FLE6DBX/827/2/E27 Edison Plus, FLE9TBX/865/E27 Edison Plus, FLE9TBX/865/2/E14 Edison Plus, FLE18TBX/827/2/E27 Edison Plus and FLE6DBX/827/2/E14 Edison Plus). The removal takes effect from 16 December 2009 and these models are not allowed to be supplied in Hong Kong. According to GEIOC, they have recalled most of the CFLs supplied in this year and initiated a free replacement scheme for the concerned CFL models. Initial phase of mandatory energy efficiency labelling scheme to take full effect from Monday (9 November 2009)
The initial phase of the Mandatory Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme (MEELS) will be in full implementation from Monday (9 November). The initial phase of MEELS covers three types of prescribed products, namely room air conditioners, refrigerating appliances and compact fluorescent lamps. Starting from 9 November 2009, all prescribed products must carry energy labels with information on their energy efficiency performance before they are supplied to the local market. Whirlpool offers free maintenance service for 3 models of dehumidifiers
Whirlpool (Hong Kong) Limited (Whirlpool) announced a voluntary free maintenance service on three models of "Whirlpool" dehumidifiers (model nos. : SS20, SS205 and SS206 with serial nos. between CNN040300000 and CNN064199999) supplied between January 2004 and December 2006. According to Whirlpool's information, the internal motor starting capacitors may overheat during prolonged operation of the dehumidifiers, posing a potential risk of electric short circuit.
Consumers, who are in possession of the dehumidifiers, are advised to stop using them and immediately contact Whirlpool to arrange for the free maintenance service. The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department has published "Hong Kong Energy End-use Data 2009 " which provide information on the consumption data of the different energy fuel types and the specific purposes for which these fuels are consumed, e.g. space-conditioning, lighting, cooking, etc. The data provide a better understanding of energy consumption pattern and usage in Hong Kong. Removal of Reference Numbers
under Energy Efficiency (Labelling of Products) Ordinance, Cap. 598
With effect from 27 August 2009, the reference numbers L090204, L090205, L090206 and L090207 of models TC-S 20W-Y-E27, TC-S 20W-Y-B22, TC-S 20W-W-E27 and TC-S 20W-W-B22 respectively of compact fluorescent lamps brand TAI CHI have been removed from the record of listed models. These product models are no longer allowed to be supplied after 8 November 2009 (i.e. after expiry of the grace period). Please click here for details.
